The automotive company Hyundai from South Korea was founded in 1967 by Korean industrialist Jong Joo-yong. The manufacturer tries to adhere to the world standard WMI, when forming a personal code. This is done only for cars in the North American market. European models do not contain a checksum on 9 characters.

According to the WMI code directory, the first 3 characters indicate the country of origin:

KM2, KM5-KM8, KMC, KME, KMF, KMH, KMJ, KN1, KN2, KNH and the rest of KM, KN – Korea;
MAL, MB2, MC3 – India;
NA6 – Iran;
NLH, NLJ – Turkey;
X7M, X89, XU7, Z94 – Russia;
Y6L – Ukraine.

The specific location of the assembly is determined by 11 VIN positions:

A – A-San (Korea);
C – Cheon-Ju (Korea);
M – Chennnai (Madras) (India);
M – TagAZ (Russia);
U – Ul-San (Korea);
Z – Izmit (Turkey).

The model year is encrypted in 10 characters.
